Job Placements Occupy Top Position than Skill Building for the Engineering Colleges: IET Feedback Survey 2015

Engineering colleges emphasize more on the job placements, than building skills in their students. This is not a random statement, but it is the new finding in the joint research done by Engineering Admissions & Perceptions – India, IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) and Feedback Consulting.

Out of the 187 engineering colleges, 100 industry leaders and 200 parents surveyed, 55% engineering colleges and 85% industry leaders are of the opinion that engineering colleges prefer the job placements more than developing the research abilities and skills in the students. This report was published in New Delhi some days back, by the Chief Executive of the IET, Nigel Fine, and President - Elect of the IET, Naomi Climer.

This survey has provided clear information about the present engineering trends, and it emphasizes on the need of building the skills in the engineering students, since many of the market leaders and parents are of the same opinion.

While the job placements are good to secure the future of students, lack of skills can play a spoilsport for the engineering graduates to get selected in the campus placements, and off campus drives as well. This can seriously hurt the job prospects of the students, and they may be even forced to waste 1 or 2 years after engineering for the job hunt.

So, the engineering colleges should focus on the development of skills in the students, while launching training sessions to make them ready to face the campus placement drives. Any failure in complying with these requirements can make the students fall short of the important skills, which can discourage the corporate firms from selecting them into the offices.

While many of the engineering colleges in India are following the controversial trend, others are keen on developing the innate talents of their students. These engineering colleges are organizing various academic programs, both theoretical and practical, for making the students well versed with the engineering aspects and ready to handle the engineering job roles. They also concentrate on developing the communication skills in the students, which is a prime requirement for any corporate or government firm.

The campus placements in these colleges are a boon for their students, since the chances of getting placed are high, due to the sound academic and communication skills. They can also implement their talent in the prestigious off campus drives, and secure important & challenging job roles. Sphoorthy Engineering College of Hyderabad is one such college, and it has earned many allocades from the corporates as well as students and their parents, for their emphasis on the development of skills in the students, and providing numerous in-campus placement drives.
